The People and Places Keeping Austin Weird

The City of Austin and its identity evolved rapidly over the past 20 years, and the rate of growth brought challenges that implicated the city’s collective culture. We asked whether Austin had retained its “weird” slacker spirit amidst surging wealth and whether “Keep Austin Weird” had become a marketable commodity rather than a reflection of community values. This panel explored how modern Austin still manifested as an inclusive home for cowboys, hippies, artists, and entrepreneurs alike.

Speakers:

  • Les Carnes, Trustee, Eeyore's Birthday Party
  • Broderick James, Jr., "Positive Thinking Kingpin of Weird" formerly known as "Rundberg Running Man"
  • J Muzacz, Artist, Co-founder of The Mosaic Workshop, Author of ATX Urban Art
  • Amy Stansbury, Editor-In-Chief of The Austin Common
  • Moderator: Matt Largey, Projects Editor, KUT
