LBJ’s Longhorn Jacket

This weeks object is a burnt orange jacket (2009.8.1) worn by President Johnson while attending University of Texas at Austin football games. This silk jacket, especially made for LBJ, is complete with buttons featuring the Presidential seal. The LBJ Presidential Library is on the UT-Austin campus.

Did You Know…
Historian and Johnson biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin noted that LBJ didn't enjoy football and would "wait impatiently for the action to end so that he could talk politics." But he was good friends with Coach Darrell Royal and understood that the Longhorns represented Texas. According to Kearns, that's why the LBj Library is built on the UT campus.
