Preston Bruce – White House doorman for 21 years

A resident of South Carolina and the son of a sharecropper and barber, Preston Bruce walked his way through the history books from 1953 to 1976 as doorman at the White House.
For the rich and famous who visited the White House while Bruce was there, it is likely they never knew whether ‘Bruce’ was his first or last name. However, the lean, handsome Negro with the white-mane was definitely remembered for his impeccable black suit-white tie outfit and his courtliness towards guests at the White House. The first of the White House staff to greet dignitaries upon arrival, he was normally the last to bid them goodbye when they departed. read more
